VonSteenburg signs with SVSU

WEST BRANCH — Ogemaw Heights Senior Kellen VonSteenburg signed his letter of intent to swim at Saginaw Valley State University at the high school April 11.

VonSteenburg started his swimming career at 6-years-old. He said his family inspired him to start swimming.

“My mom and uncle swam,” he said. “They’re big motivators for me.”

VonSteenburg said his biggest accomplishments are breaking the school record for 50 the freestyle and winning Swimmer of the Year in 2017.

VonSteenburg’s coach throughout high school, Louis Hofer, said he is more than an excellent swimmer. What sets him apart, she said, is his work ethic. She said he is always working, even outside of the swim season.

Hofer said he did weight training in the summer and was the manager for the girls swim team in fall 2017. Hofer said he helped with stats, travelled to all the games and supported the girls.

“He’s one of the sweetest kids I’ve had,” she said.

Hofer said VonSteenburg would thank her and the other coaches after every meet.

“He’s going to do so well in college,” Hofer said. “I’m not worried about him at all.”

VonSteenburg has taken part in other sports at the high school besides swimming, including baseball and golf. Hofer said she believes this makes him well rounded and a better athlete.

VonSteenburg said he worked hard throughout high school and started to push himself even harder his junior year. He said he saw results from this and left advice for other swimmers:

“Never quit and work really hard at practice,” he said.

VonSteenburg will continue swimming in college.

“I love the sport, and I want to keep doing it for as long as I can,” he said.

VonSteenburg chose SVSU for the swim program and the engineer program and plans to major in engineering.
