Victorian Ball coming to West Branch
WEST BRANCH –– The first West Branch Victorian Ball will be held April 22 for residents to experience Victorian-style food, dancing and fashion.
The Victorian Ball is a cotillion dance with a Victorian flare mirroring the downtown West Branch theme, according to event coordinator Gina Rosebrugh. She said the event had previously been held in Hartwick Pines Visitor Center for several years before its cancellation.
“Quite a few people from West Branch had attended a couple of years back,” Rosebrugh said. “They stopped having it and they just enjoyed it so much we decided to have it here.”
There will be a dress requirement of formal or Sunday best attire, but Rosebrugh said prom attire will be acceptable if attendees don’t have anything from the era.
Rosebrugh said the dance will be called by Glen Morningstar Jr., a dance instructor from Highland with decades of experience, according to his website.
“The dances for the Victorian Ball will be from the Victorian period, 1837-1901,” Morningstar said. “The dance forms will be longways and reels –– like the Virginia Reel –– quadrille and old cotillions, –– like square dances –– Spanish dances and German party dances. The movements of each of the dances are walked through by the dance leader without music, so that the dancers can "practice" the movements and see the patterns. Music for each dance is then started and the dance leader prompts the moves during the music. The program is structured to begin with easy dance moves and then adds more moves as the evening progresses.”
Rosebrugh said it is intended for those of all ages who are able to move and follow directions, with a recommendation of ages 9-100. She said she is hoping to see between 60 and 100 attendees at the Victorian Ball.
“It’s lots of fun just learning how to dance an old style and it’s a family event so you can go with your whole family,” Rosebrugh said. “We participated as a family for four years and it’s just so much fun. It’s just clean, family fun and you get to know new people, get to dance and it’s a nice time.”
The event will be held at the West Branch First United Methodist Church at 2490 W. State Rd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the dance will end at 9:30 p.m. There will be an intermission at 8 p.m. with refreshments including punch, petit fours and coffee.
Tickets are $10 per person or $40 per family and are available at the door or may be purchased ahead of time. For more information or to get tickets, call Rosebrugh at 989-345-1980.
