Rifle River Rec welcoming visitors for family fun

Posted

LUPTON — The Rifle River Recreation Area is offering a chance to escape cabin fever and enjoy some outdoor activities Saturday during its Family Winterfest.

Attendees will gather at the Explorer Guide Area from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they can enjoy a campfire, cook their own hot dogs and sip hot chocolate or coffee. Park Supervisor Tricia Weisend said hayrides through the park will run continuously throughout the day, or when enough people are interested.

A sledding hill will be open for use weather permitting, as well as opportunities to utilize the park for other outdoor activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Snowshoes are available on a first come, first served basis, while visitors must bring any other equipment including sleds.

Weisend said she is hoping for snow this year, as warm weather last year caused attendance to lag.

The event is free, though a Recreation Passport is required for park entry. The park is located at 2550 E. Rose City Rd., Lupton.
