Recall language filed against Edwards Township clerk

WEST BRANCH — Recall language was filed Monday against Edwards Township Clerk Dennis Stephens by Douglas Brewer, according to information obtained from Ogemaw County Clerk Gary Klacking.

The recall petition gives two reasons for attempting to recall Stephens.

“We request that the clerk of Edwards Township, Dennis Anthony Stephens, be recalled for voting yes to sue the city of West Branch for breach of contract on Feb. 13, 2017, when there was not a signed contract with the city of West Branch, regarding the senior services millage,” the language reads. “For the disrespect and mistreatment of a township board member, Trustee Brent Illig, during the Feb. 12, 2018 public meeting and requesting Trustee Brent Illig to resign.”

Klacking said a clarity/factual hearing will be held before the county’s election commission at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23. At that time the commission will determine whether the language is clear and factual.

If the language is approved, petitions would need to be circulated for the recall request. According to state law, 25 percent of the number of voters in the electoral district during the last gubernatorial election are required to get the issue placed on the ballot.

That amounts to 122 signatures, Klacking said.
