Prescott man dies in freak motorcycle accident

PRESCOTT — Ogemaw County Sheriff Deputy Brian Gilbert, Jr. said it was an out-of-the-ordinary accident that claimed the life of Joshua Chapa, 35, of Prescott, July 17.

“It isn’t the typical accident,” Gilbert said. “It was definitely out of the ordinary.”

According to Gilbert, at approximately 5:55 p.m. Chapa, with a group of three other motorcyclists were stopped at the stop sign at Harrison Road and Sage Lake Road in the Village of Prescott. When the group proceeded to take off south on Sage Lake Road, Chapa reportedly hit the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and lost control of his motorcycle.

Chapa was tossed from his motorcycle and tumbled into the oncoming lane of traffic, where he was run over by another vehicle driven by a 44-year-old Prescott man, Gilbert said.

He said the accident was at low speeds and unavoidable by the motorist.

Chapa was pronounced dead on the scene.

The sheriff’s department was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Ogemaw County EMS, Richland Fire Department and Ogemaw County Central Dispatch.
