MILLS TWP. — The Michigan State Police is currently investigating two suspicious fires due to their close proximity July 11.

The Mills Township Fire Department responded to two structure fires in Mills Township July 11, in close proximity and occurring around an hour of each other Chief Brian Gilbert said.

Gilbert said as the department battled a fire on the 1800 block of West Third St., dispatch sent out a call about another fire located on the 1800 block of West Second St.

Because of the physical proximity and the timing, Gilbert said the fires are suspicious in nature and the investigation was passed off to the Michigan State Police.

According to Ogemaw County Central Dispatch, the fire on Third Street was reported at 1:11 a.m. and the fire on Second Street was reported at 2:20 a.m.

Gilbert said the Second Street structure was an occupied house and the Third Street structure is a rental house, and its previous tenants were in the process of moving out.

Mills fire department was assisted on the scenes by the Prescott, Richland-Logan and Moffat fire departments, MSP and Ogemaw County EMS.

The cause of the fires is unknown at this time.
