Izworski signs with Madonna University

Ogemaw Heights senior Payton Izworski signed her letter of intent to play basketball for Madonna University at the high school May 30.

Payton said she has been playing basketball for nine years. She played for the Future Falcons, a team in which younger girls were coached by varsity girls. One reason she decided to start playing the sport was because her older sister Haley played, inspiring her.

Payton’s parents were at the signing and are extremely proud of their daughter.

“She’s loved the sport since she was young,” Payton’s mother Amy LaFave said. “She’s had a basketball in her hand since she was 7.”

LaFave said her daughter works hard and will do well both on the court and in her schoolwork.

Payton’s father, Joe Izworski, agreed and said his daughter is driven.

Payton said she chose Madonna University because of the dietetic program. She plans to study nutrition and one day hopes to work at a hospital and help formulate meals for babies. Her interest in nutrition is from playing sports throughout high school. Besides playing basketball, she ran cross country and played softball.

She said she realizes the importance of eating right because it makes a difference.

“When you don’t eat healthy, you’re not going to be performing as well,” Payton said.

Payton advises anyone who might want to follow her footsteps to work hard and try to be a leader. She also recommended having strong communication skills and stepping outside of your comfort zone. For basketball, she said this might mean trying different positions, such as dribbling or shooting, instead of positions a player might be more used to.
