Donald Frank Gibbs, 79, of Onondaga passed away surrounded by his family Aug. 22, 2018.

Donald was born in West Branch on March 9, 1939, the son of (William) Frank and Helen (Rambour) Gibbs. He was a graduate of West Branch High School and Michigan State University. Donald started Gibbs Berryland in 1971 with his wife Josephine “Jo.” Together they ran the business for 34 years side by side, growing strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and various other fruits, but he frequently said, “The best crop Jo and I raised were our three children.” He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, dancing with Jo and watching the MSU women’s basketball team play. Most important to him were traveling and continuing to learn and experience the world. After retiring, Don and Jo traveled more frequently, reaching five of the seven continents at least once. He wished he had retired sooner so that he could have made it to all seven.

Donald is survived by his children, Judy (Joseph) Ferraro of Durham, N.C., Ginger (Andrew) Shay of Brooklyn, Mich., and Gregory (Kendra) Gibbs of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, JD Ferraro, Mary Jo Ferraro, Elizabeth Ferraro, Ethan Shay, Callum Gibbs, Georgia Gibbs and Clara Gibbs; sister, Barb Cordova; two nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Gibbs; and infant son.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at the Mills Funeral Home Shelly-Odell Chapel with Pastor Bill Muller officiating. Interment will follow at Onondaga Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and will be held one hour prior the day of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Onondaga Community Church, 4474 S. Onondaga Rd., Onondaga, MI 49264. Please visit www.millsfuneral.com to place online condolences or to sign the guestbook.
