Detroit Lions waive OHHS grad Anthony Zettel

Cleveland Browns pick him up

Posted

DETROIT — Ogemaw Heights grad Anthony Zettel was waived by the Detroit Lions Sept. 5.

The Lions made the announcement after awarding defensive end Romeo Okwara via waivers from the New York Giants.

The news doesn’t mean Zettel’s NFL career is over, however, as he was plucked from the waiver wire the following day by the Cleveland Browns.

Zettel played his first year in the NFL for the Lions in 2016 after being drafted from Penn State University. He started the entire season last year as the Lions dealt with injuries on the defensive line. In his two-year NFL career, Zettel has 56 tackles, 41 solo and 15 assisted, 7.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

Okwara played six games for the Giants last season. He had three tackles. The Lions report that Okwara originally entered the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Giants after playing at Notre Dame. That season he played in 16 games, starting four, and tallied 21 tackles and one sack.

The Cleveland Browns finished last in the AFC North last season with an 0-16 record. The Browns played the Lions last year on Nov. 12, where they fell 38-24. Zettel had five tackles and a sack against the Browns that day.

The Browns open their season Sunday at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Lions have lost their minds! What kind of a trade is that? Wishing Anthony Zettel the best. Hopefully a "Winning" team will pick him up where he can really shine! Stay healthy and keep your great spirit up AZ!!

Oh, and see just how much the Tiger's trade of Verlander hurt him!

Dont think zettle will be out of a job, but he isn't a starter. He also isn't a 3-4 lineman, which the lions are now. He also looked terrible during preseason, off on his tracking the qb constantly. But i do think he will be somewhere. not as a starter but as a reserve. The lions were horrible last year, thats why he was a starter. I wish him all the luck but i also want the lions to have the best players available.
