Craft show to raise funds for Optimist kids programming

SKIDWAY LAKE — For the third year, the Skidway Lake Cardinal Optimist Club is calling for crafters and craft lovers to come together April 13 to support programs and events for area kids.

Organizer April Harkey-Mason said the $15 charge for vendor tables goes toward the club’s youth fund for events it hosts throughout the year, such as the Fun in the Sun Family Day at Elbow Lake, the annual fishing derby, Halloween trunk or treat and more.

The Optimist Club also organizes perfect attendance programs for the high school and — new this year — for the junior high at Whittemore-Prescott Area Schools. The names of high school students with perfect attendance are put into a drawing, and the first name drawn receives $500. All remaining perfect attendees receive $50. The junior high program runs along the same principle, only scaled down.

The craft show is one of two held each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall craft show features a gun raffle each year, and Harkey-Mason said that almost entirely funds the high school perfect attendance program. For the first time the spring craft show will feature a meat raffle, and she is hoping this will cover the junior high program.

The show will feature local crafters as well as direct sales vendors such as Paparazzi, Tupperware and more. Local chainsaw carver John Wesley will also be outside doing demonstrations of his work, which will also be for sale.

A lunch of hot dogs, chips and pop will be available.

Harkey-Mason said unlike a lot of craft shows, this one has no admission fee. It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 3 County Club, 2477 Greenwood Rd., Skidway Lake.

“We’re hoping to get a lot of Easter and Mother’s Day shoppers,” she said.

A few vendor tables were still open at the time of this writing. Those interested can call Harkey-Mason at 989-578-8768.
