Community invited to Rock for Rescue

Posted

WEST BRANCH — Some rock tunes may transport event goers to the era of neon colors and poofy hair during the Ogemaw County Humane Society’s ’80s-themed Rock for Rescue fundraising event March 9.

The event, a first for the humane society, will feature the Frankenmuth-based band Slick Jimmy. Executive Director Ashley Dennis said she previously worked with the lead female singer, so she decided to reach out to her with the idea of doing a benefit concert.

“Eighties music is pretty popular and that’s what they do,” she said.

In line with the theme, Dennis encouraged attendees to dress up in their best ’80s outfit for the chance to win a prize in a costume contest.

A chicken dinner will also be served at the event, with mashed potatoes, vegetables and dessert.

Tickets cost $20 in advance, or $25 at the door, with all proceeds going to the shelter.

“We are not county-funded — we rely on fundraisers and community donations,” Dennis said. “This is to get the word out that we’re here and we need help.”

She said depending on how the benefit goes and the feedback from the community, she would be interested in organizing something like this annually.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the humane society, Morse Clark Furniture Company, Diebold Insurance or West Branch City Hall.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in West Branch, with music playing until midnight. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

“Even if you can’t come to the shelter because you’re afraid you’ll take home all the animals, it’s a good way to support us,” Dennis said. “It’s not really an animal theme; it relates to a bigger crowd. You may not like puppy kisses or kitty scratches, but you can still help support us.”

The shelter is also planning a pancake breakfast to be determined, a 10-year anniversary open house in June, a microchipping clinic in August and the Mutt March in September.

The times listed confuse me. It says doors open at 8:30, but the meal is at six. [?] Maybe means: music segment starts at 8:30?
