Carl Ronald Somers, 79, of West Branch passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018, at his home.

Carl was born March 5, 1939, in Detroit to his loving mother, Mary Helen Somers. He married Rita Mae Whitlock on April 27, 1957, in East Detroit. He enjoyed living in West Branch since 2005, formerly of Detroit and Redford. Carl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elks Lodge 2097 in Redford, and Knights of Columbus 3677 in Redford. He enjoyed camping, hunting, swimming, being at the beach and spending time with his family. Carl was a jack of all trades. He was a cabinetmaker and even helped make props for the kids’ plays. Carl was a Scout leader and Little League coach. Carl drank the first bottle of Orange Crush made at the Red Arrow Bottling Company in downtown Detroit.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Rita M. Somers of West Branch; daughters, DiAnne Somers of West Branch, Wendy (David) Becerra of Wyandotte, Rita (Dale) Hensel of Macomb and Kim (Joe) Brady of Mount Clemens; sons, Robert “Bob” (Christine Athey) Somers of Hamel, Minn., Richard (Nancy) Somers of West Bloomfield and Cal (Robin Smith) Somers of St. Helen; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and cousin, Helen Arthur of Charlevoix. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Helen Somers; father, Carl Fredrick Schnueringer; grandchildren, David O. Becerra and Kerry R. Somers; sister, Edith Tange; brothers, Johnny Somers, Louis Somers, Robert “Bob” Somers and Donald Somers; and sister, Jennie “Jean” Bayard.

Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin Wednesday, May 30, 2018, from 1-8 p.m. with rosary being said at 7 p.m. Celebration of life Mass will take place Thursday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation at the church will be held one hour prior to Mass. Father Patrick Maher will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
