Benton C. Norton

Died July 29, 2018

Benton Clifford Norton, 92, of West Branch passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018.

He was born on Nov. 22, 1925, in Whittemore. Ben was a 1943 graduate of Burleigh Rural Agricultural High School in Whittemore where he lettered in basketball, football and baseball. Upon graduating high school, he joined the Merchant Marines during World War II and served aboard several ships. In 1950 he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

After the war, Ben worked as an electrical foreman, 10 years with Davis Electric in Traverse City and later in life as a land management supervisor for the oil and gas industry in Texas and surrounding states. Upon retirement, he resided in the West Branch area close to family and friends.

Ben enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and traveling throughout the United States. He had many talents such as painting, lapidary, stain glass and woodworking. Ben was known for his great sense of humor and had many friends. His favorite poem by Sam Walter Foss was “The House by the Side of the Road.”

He was active in the Methodist church. He had been on two missionary trips, to Venezuela and to Jamaica, and he especially enjoyed helping the children. Ben loved to sing during church and read the Bible often.

He will be missed by his children, Karen Henderson, Sandra Marutz, Eric Norton, Marcia Golden, Susan Frounfelter, Debra Morris, Nancy Hoth and Charles Ladensack; and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Jean Norton.

A special thank you to the people at Compassus Hospice and to The Brook in West Branch for their loving care and support during his final days.

Ben requested not to have services but to quietly join his wife Donna at their final resting place in the Kalkaska cemetery.
